28th - Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day
The Duruthu Full Moon Poya day signifies the Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka twenty five centuries ago.  It was nine months after the Buddha’s enlightenment that the blessed one visited Mahiyangana in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka.  The Duruthu Festival is significant around at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara where the Duruthu Perahera is conducted by the southern bank of the Kelani river.

A special class will be held at the Nirodha city center and will be accessible online on this Poya day.  Register

Useful Information for the month:

26th - Navam Full Moon Poya Day
The Navam Full Moon Poya day has significance as there are two important events that occurred on this day.  The first-ever Buddhist congregation was held and was attended by more than 1,250 members of the Mahasangha.  Another significant event that also occurred on the Navam Poya day was that the Buddha appointed his two chief disciples Sariputta and Moggallana.

28 - Medin Full Moon Poya Day
It was on the Medin Full Moon Poya Day that the Buddha along with a retinue of about 20,000 disciples made the journey of around 900 miles from Veluwana in Rajagir to Kimbulwathpura to meet his father King Suddhodhana and other family members and friends of the Sakhyan clan.

26 Bak Full Moon Poya Day
Five years after his Enlightenment the Buddha visited Sri Lanka for the second time. He went to Nagadipa in Sri Lanka to settle a dispute between the Yakkhas and Nagas. Buddha also made the Nagas realize that greed and avariciousness leads to suffering.

26 Vesak Full Moon Poya Day
The Vesak Full Moon Poya Day has great significance as it is the day that commemorates the birth, enlightenment and Parinibbana (passing away) of the Buddha. It is also on this day that the Buddha made his third visit to Sri Lanka to Kelaniya.  Vesak is known as the festival of lights and is celebrated in many countries around the world.

Poson Poya commemorates the occasion when in the 3rd century B.C.,  the son of the Indian Emperor Asoka,  Arahant Mahinda brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka and converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism.

23 Esala Full Moon Poya Day
On the Esala Full Moon Poya day, Prince Siddhartha renounced lay life to become an ascetic. He left the household life leaving on his horse Kanthaka and accompanied by the charioteer Channa.  On this day, monastics begin the Annual Rains Retreat or Vas season that lasts for approximately three months.

22 Nikini Full Moon Poya Day
The Nikini Full Moon Poya Day commemorates the Buddha preaching his first sermon, Dhammacakkapavattana Sutra (Setting in Motion the Wheel of the Dhamma), to the five disciples, Kondanna, Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahanama and Assaji, in the Deer Park, Isipathana, in Banaras.

20 Binara Full Moon Poya Day
The Binara Full Moon Poya Day is the anniversary of the commencement of the Meheni Sasanaya (female monastics).  When the Buddha was residing at Nigrodharamaya in the city of Kapilavasthu, Mahaprajapathi Gothami requested permission for women to enter the Order.  After laying down the eight tenets of the code to be followed by the Bhikkhunis, the Buddha granted permission for women to enter the Order.

20 Vap Full Moon Poya Day
Vap Full Moon Poya Day marks the end of the 3 month Rains Retreat or Vas season by Buddhist monastics. The laity offer Katina robes requisites and provisions on Vap Poya to Buddhist monks as an act of merit and to gain good Karma.

18 ILL Full Moon Poya Day
It was on an Ill Poya day when the Buddha instructed the first Buddhist missionaries comprising of sixty disciples who were sent to the four corners of the country.  This was the start of spreading the message of Dhamma around the world.

18 Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day
The Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day is the anniversary of Sangamitta’s arrival in Sri Lanka.  Sangamitta was the sister of Arahant Mahinda Thera and she entered the Bhikkuni Sasana at the age of 18 and was responsible for the establishment of the Bhikkuni Sasanaya or Buddhist order for females in Sri Lanka.
