the more interesting the Dhamma point, the faster he walked
As Bhikkhu Samadhikusalo says, walking with Bhanté Gunaratana and being his student is synonymous. In 1985 Dhammaruwan was invited to participate in a retreat in Australia by then Elizabeth Gorski, now an ordained monastic. Both Bhanté Gunaratana and Bhikkhu Samadhikusalo often relate how they met when Bhanté Gunaratana came to Sydney in 1985. Someone contacted Elizabeth to give a lift to Bhanté Gunaratana from the Sydney railway station to the Sri Lankan temple, and since it was a single monk to accompany her, she invited Dhammaruwan where they first met and subsequently traveled together in 1985 in Sydney and the surrounding areas, This was a beginning of a wonderful student and teacher relationship which developed Dhammaruwan to be Bhanté Gunaratana’s kappiya several times, temporarily be ordained as Samanera Dhammaratana and finally in 2016 to permanently ordain as his student.
This student-teacher relationship running over four decades was filled with various anecdotes; Dhamma teaching and learning; learning about a monks’ life and life in general and most of all as Bhikkhu Samadhikusalo says it was a constant attempt to keep up with Bhanté Gunaratana in Dhamma, monks life and the hardest being in walking as then he had a steady stride in walking five miles at a stretch. Bhikkhu Samadhikusalo says when he gets tired of walking and slows down, then Bhanté Gunaratana used to say some interesting Dhamma point so that he would somehow keep up with Bhante G. and the more interesting the Dhamma point, the faster he walked, Bhanté Gunaratana shared his life stories and the time was always spent with a lot of smiles and laughter.

Ordination Ceremony of
Venerable Samadhikusala
On April 10, 2016, Dhammaruwan who has been a student of Bhanté Henepola Gunaratana Nayaka Maha Thero for over 30 years took permanent ordination in a ceremony held at Bhavana Society’s Forest Monastery in West Virginia, USA.
The ceremony was presided by Bhanté Henepola Gunaratana Nayaka Maha Thero in the presence of Dhammaruwan’s long time friend Venerable Analayo, close meditation students of Dhammaruwan who came for the ordination from Europe, U.K. and other parts of America. Among them were: Yogis Suzanne Djeisterhaus, Mark Vangalderen, Johnny Ward and Richard Branca, the resident monks of Bhavana Society, and Maryland Vihara’s Venerable Katugastota Uparatana.
Many lay devotees were in attendance and offered lunch dana for the monks and guests.
In the ordination ceremony Bhanté G., approved and conferred Dhammaruwan with the monastic name of “Samadhikusalo” choosing this name to honour a commitment that Dhammaruwan had made to Late Venerable Ampitiya Rahula Maha Thero to whom he had promised to take the name “Samadhikusalo” if and when he ordained permanently.
